The Ebro Delta is the largest aquatic habitat in Catalonia
It represents an enclave of vital importance within the wetlands of the Mediterranean, with an area of 320 km2. The balance between its natural wealth and exploitation by man has not been easy, which is why, in 1983, the Generalitat de Catalunya approved the creation of the Ebro Delta Natural Park.
The Delta landscape has a strong personality. The totally flat lands give it a particular aspect. The extensive rice fields change according to the seasons and, in its coastal part, we find one of the most attractive landscapes of the Mediterranean.
There are incredible lagoons surrounded by reeds and rushes. In the peripheral part we find large extensions of long and deserted beaches. Another important aspect of the area is agriculture, one of the great current economic bases of the Delta, with a clear predominance of rice.
Less than an hour from Peñíscola we can find this marvel.
We tell you about different activities you can do in the Ebro Delta, to enjoy a different weekend:
- If you have time and you like walking you can not miss the Far de Fangar. What is most striking about this place is its desert aspect, peculiar dunes along 6 km by the sea. To walk around Punta del Fangar you have to leave the car at the Restaurant Vascos, and attention, which are at least 3 hours (to go and return) to get to the lighthouse, but it will be worth it.
Observe the birds that are in the lagoons of the Delta. There you will be able to see different birds such as flamingos or the elegant egrets.
- You can’t go to the Ebro Delta without trying some of its rice dishes. There is no restaurant in the area that does not offer rice in its menu.
- Go to Trabucador Beach, a 6 km beach that extends from the south of La Tancada to Punta de la Banya, a restricted access area. And for the more sporty and daring, this beach is the ideal place for kitesurfing.
