Recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Spain, Peñiscola is characterised by its majestic castle of Templar origin that forms a tombolo on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Also known as Papa Luna’s Castle, this place was the refuge of Benedict XIII (Pedro Martínez de Luna) during the Western Schism in the 15th century, after he was forced to leave Avignon. He lived in Peñíscola Castle from 1411 until his death in 1423.
