XXII edition of the Classical Theatre Festival Castillo de Peñíscola

During the month of July you can enjoy the classical theatre festival of Peñíscola in its twenty-first edition consolidated as one of the most important classical theatre circuits in Spain.

From Friday the 5th to Saturday the 27th of July there will be 10 plays to be performed in the town, distributed between the Patio de Armas of the imposing fortress bathed by the Mediterranean Sea and the streets of the old town surrounding the castle.

PROGRAMMING

The first work in 2019 in the Weapons Courtyard will be Molière’s ‘The Imaginary Sick’,

Thursday 11 (20:30) the theatre will return to the streets of the old town with ‘El carro de las maravillas’.

Saturday 13 (22:30; 15 euros) will arrive a classic by Francisco Ruiz de Zorrilla, ‘Entre bobos anda el juego’. A comedy about marriages and class differences.

Tuesday 16 (22:30; 8 euros) will open the cycle ‘Unipersonal’, with the Argentine actress Carolina Calema. Its intention is to make the public think about whether the female archetypes of Lope de Vega’s works should continue to spread today. A feminist demand for the role that women have to play in society.

Thursday 18 (22:30; 15 euros) ‘Desengaños amorosos’ will be staged.

Saturday 20 (22:30; 15 euros), the most popular of the works of this XXII edition of the festival. An Ideal Husband’, by Oscar Wilde, brings together Juanjo Artero, Ana Arias, Carles Francino, Candela Serrat and Ania Hernández from Castellón. All of them develop a comedy about a marriage that seems to be perfect, until the discovery of a secret begins to generate many doubts.

Tuesday 23 (22:30; 8 euros) with ‘Ildebrando Biribó, el último Cyrano’. This is the second piece in the ‘Unipersonales’ cycle.

Saturday 27 (20:00; free) will be seen in the streets surrounding the Castle the play ‘The Pilgrim and the Pope’, a special creation for this edition of the festival by Jesús Pescador for Teatro de los Navegantes.

A few hours later, at 22:30, closure of this XXII edition with ‘The Valencian widow’. A work that can also be seen at the Almagro Festival and which defends the right of women to decide about their own lives. A text from the 17th century transferred to the present day.

One of the novelties of this XXII edition is the realization of a series of presentations on the world of the theater that will take place moments before beginning the functions of Saturdays at night in the Patio de Armas.
