Castellón Castles

A few kilometres from Peñíscola there are several castles to lose yourself in and discover unforgettable corners. Places like Morella, Vilafamés, Oropesa… have fortresses that you cannot leave without visiting them.

Next, we show you five castles that you will be able to visit since they are in good state of conservation and you will be able to learn a lot of history about them.

1. Castle of Morella

Located in the north of Castellón in the Maestrazgo region, Morella is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Only 1 hour away from Apartamentos Tamarindos, Morella is a visit not to be missed by any of our visitors. It is a very unique inland village with a historically strategic location that fills the landscape with almost two kilometres of wall, sixteen towers, six portals and crowned by the imposing castle.

2. Villafamés Castle

Villafamés is a municipality that belongs to the Plana Alta region, 50 minutes from Peñíscola. Its castle, of Arab origin, is located on top of a small rocky hill, presiding over the town, which extends at its feet. The castle has been declared a Monument, as well as an Asset of Cultural Interest and Historical Heritage of Spain. The Old Town is full of narrow and zigzagging streets typical of an Islamic urban layout, crowned by a Castle. It also stands out for its museum of contemporary art, whose artistic fund has about 500 works. Special mention for its delicious gastronomy, its olive oil and its wines.

3. Castle of Oropesa

Oropesa del Mar is a tourist town located by the sea, in the province of Castellón. At the top of its old town, and presiding over the municipality, is its castle, of Muslim origin. The Castle of Oropesa del Mar was initially built by the Muslims who left Orpesa la Vella for strategic and security reasons. Later, given its military importance, it was conquered by historical figures such as El Cid (1090) or King James I (1233).

4. Jérica Castle

Jérica is a town in Castellón, whose castle forms a monumental ensemble together with other buildings, such as the Murarian ribbons and the Hermitage of San Roque, constructions declared to be of Cultural Interest, and which are dated between the 14th and 16th centuries. The castle is located at the top of the mountain known as Peña Tajada, with the town and the river Palancia at its feet. One of the most outstanding elements of the castle is its Torre del Homenaje (Homage Tower). Also, its wall, in which several gates are conserved, among them the Portal de la Sala, the Portal de Santa Ana and the Portal de San Juan.

5. Castle of Alcalá de Xivert

Half an hour from Peñíscola we find Alcalá de Xivert, a beautiful village with a castle, located in the Sierra de Irta. A place where you can enjoy wonderful views.

The castle, of Islamic origin, was built during the 10th and 11th centuries, although it should also be noted that it underwent numerous reforms during the 13th century, at the beginning of which it was conquered by the Order of the Temple. Among the elements that remain from the Islamic period of the fortress include the Torre de Poniente, the Torre Sur, the cistern and part of the wall.
