What to see and do in Peñíscola over 2 days

6 mins, 26 segs

Two days might not seem like much. In Peñíscola, however, they go a long way.v

For walking along the Mediterranean, climbing up to the castle, wandering through streets steeped in centuries of history, sitting down for a leisurely meal, and also setting aside a few hours to simply enjoy the sea.

If you are planning a short stay, we suggest a simple way to organize two days in Peñíscola without turning the trip into a race to see the sights.

It doesn’t matter if you visit during the week, over a long weekend, or while taking a few days off. The idea is the same: to discover some of the must-see spots while also leaving time to enjoy Peñíscola at your own pace.

Day 1: From the seafront promenade to the heart of Peñíscola

Start by looking at the castle.

If you stay at Apartamentos Tamarindos, starting the route is easy. Upon stepping outside, you will find Playa Norte and the seafront promenade, which you can follow towards the old town.

It is a route we take often, and one that never grows tiresome. Along the way, Pope Luna’s Castle remains in the distance, gradually drawing closer as you make your way beside the sea.

You don’t need to wait until summer for this experience. In spring and autumn—and even on many winter days—taking a leisurely walk along Playa Norte is one of the best ways to start the day.

Enter the old town without too many plans.

When you reach the end of the seafront promenade, the landscape changes completely. You encounter city walls, narrow streets, white facades, and slopes leading up to the higher part of the historic center. Here, we recommend doing something very simple: don’t try to follow a perfect route.

Walk slowly uphill, look around, turn down a street you hadn’t planned on taking, and let places like the Casa de las Conchas, the Bufador, or one of the small viewpoints overlooking the Mediterranean reveal themselves to you.

Much of the old town’s charm lies precisely in that: discovering it without having to constantly check your watch.

Pope Luna’s Castle: A Must-Visit

At the highest point of the rocky outcrop stands the city’s main landmark: Peñíscola Castle.

Its history is linked to the Knights Templar and, subsequently, to Benedict XIII—the well-known “Papa Luna”—who established his residence here.

But even if you know little about its history before entering, there is one more reason to visit: the views.

From up high, one can clearly appreciate Peñíscola’s privileged location, surrounded by the Mediterranean and with Playa Norte stretching out before the city.

We have a specific blog post dedicated to Pope Luna’s Castle—covering its history and interesting facts—so you can check it out if you want to plan your visit in greater detail.

Go down to the port.

After touring the castle, you can continue down through the old town towards the harbor area. It is a distinct part of Peñíscola, deeply rooted in its maritime tradition.

And after a morning of walking, it will surely be a good time to start thinking about where to eat.

Peñíscola is also discovered at the table.

If you have two days, it is worth setting aside time to sit back and enjoy. Rice dishes, fish, and Mediterranean products are part of the local cuisine and offer a way to get to know the destination.

If you don’t know what to order, you’ll find a guide to the traditional cuisine of Peñíscola and some of its most famous dishes on our blog.

End the day the way you started it: by the sea.

In the afternoon, you can continue exploring the old town, enjoy a relaxing drink, or start making your way back along Playa Norte. Walking back to Tamarindos along the seafront has an advantage: you can admire the castle again—this time as it gradually recedes into the distance behind you.

Day 2: Discover another side of Peñíscola

After a first day dedicated to the historic center and its most famous landmarks, you can plan the second day in a completely different way. We suggest choosing between nature and tranquility—or combining a bit of both.

Visit the Sierra de Irta Natural Park.

Just a few kilometers from the town center, you will find one of the most interesting natural areas on this stretch of the coast: the Sierra de Irta.

Here, the landscape changes completely. Trails, mountains, the Mediterranean, and small coves offer a chance to discover a side of Peñíscola quite different from the seafront promenade and the old town.

You don’t need to dedicate the whole day to it or choose a particularly difficult route. You can plan an outing that lasts a few hours and return afterwards.

On the Tamarindos blog, we have a dedicated post about what to see and do in the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, where you will find more information to help you plan your visit.

O dedica la mañana a no hacer demasiado

There is also another possibility, which is especially recommended if you have come specifically looking to rest.

Stroll along Playa Norte. Sit by the sea. Have a quiet drink. Ride your bike along the promenade. Or simply enjoy a morning with no schedule.

Outside the peak summer months, Peñíscola has a different pace that is well worth experiencing.

There is much more room to enjoy the little things that sometimes go unnoticed during longer vacations.

If you are visiting with your family, adapt the route.

Traveling with children changes the way you experience a destination a little, and that is perfectly fine. You don’t need to complete every stop on this route.

At Tamarindos, we offer extensive green areas and outdoor spaces, so returning after a few hours exploring Peñíscola doesn’t necessarily mean the day is over.

Can you explore Peñíscola in two days?

You can get to know a very significant part of the area. In two days, you will have time to stroll along Playa Norte, explore the Old Town, visit Papa Luna Castle, head down to the harbor, sample the local cuisine, and set aside a few hours to discover the Sierra de Irta or simply enjoy the Mediterranean.

But surely there will be something left undone. A cove. Another street. A restaurant. A walk. And that’s not a bad thing, either.

Because Peñíscola is one of those places that changes significantly depending on when you return: summer, autumn, winter, or spring offer different ways to enjoy it.

Discover Peñíscola from Tamarindos

When you have only a few days, choosing the right place to stay helps you make much better use of your time.

At Apartamentos Tamarindos Peñíscola, we are located right across from Playa Norte and connected to the Old Town by the seafront promenade. Here, you can start your day with a walk along the Mediterranean and end it by returning to your apartment the same way. You will also find spacious green areas, palm trees, swimming pools, included parking, and various apartment types to suit your travel needs.

Porque dos días pueden ser pocos. Pero bien aprovechados, pueden dar para mucho.

Are you coming to Peñíscola in October or November?

In addition to everything you can do at any time of year, autumn brings several special events to Peñíscola. If your stay coincides with any of them, it could be a great opportunity to include a unique activity in your two-day itinerary.

October 3 · New Beetle Spain Gathering

A Volkswagen New Beetle gathering is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, in Peñíscola. The event will take place in the morning in the harbor area, bringing together enthusiasts and owners of this well-known model. It is an interesting option for anyone who enjoys the automotive world and happens to be in the city at that time.

October 3 · 13th Peñíscola City Indoor Cycling Event

Also on October 3rd, the seafront promenade once again becomes a sports venue with a new edition of the Peñíscola City Indoor Cycling event. The sessions take place facing the Mediterranean, near the Tourist Office—a setting vastly different from that of a conventional cycling class.

A day combining sport, music, and some of Peñíscola’s most recognizable views.

October 9 · Pyromusical show at Playa Norte

On the night of October 9, Playa Norte will host a pyromusical show as part of the program associated with the Peñíscola International Early and Baroque Music Festival.

It is scheduled for 11:59 PM. The castle, the sea, the music, and the fireworks create a combination that would be hard to replicate elsewhere. If you are in Peñíscola that night, it is well worth going to see it.

October 16–18 · BMW Motorrad Days

One of the major autumn events returns to Peñíscola from October 16 to 18, 2026.

BMW Motorrad Days will bring together two-wheel enthusiasts for three days featuring motorcycle test rides, rides, exhibitions, new models, activities, and music.

For motorcycle enthusiasts, this time of year can also be a great excuse to combine the event with a few days by the Mediterranean.

Check the schedule before traveling.

The schedule of activities in Peñíscola may be expanded or modified as the dates approach.

If you are visiting us during October or November, we recommend checking the official schedule beforehand to verify times, locations, and any potential new activities.

And if any of these events coincide with your stay, you have yet another reason to make the most of your two days in Peñíscola.
