Pe\u00f1\u00edscola belongs to the Baix Maestrat or Bajo Maestrazgo region, located in the north of the Valencian Community, with its capital in Vinar\u00f2s.<\/h2>\n

It borders with Catalonia in the north, through the Montsi\u00e0 region, and with the Aragonese region of Matarra\u00f1a in the northwest. To the east it borders on the Mediterranean Sea<\/strong>, to the south on the Plana Alta and inland (west) it borders on the Alt Maestrat and Els Ports.<\/p>\n

The Baix Maestrat is a very rich zone in gastronomy since it offers products of high gastronomical value that go from the extra virgin olive oil of millenarian olive trees<\/strong>, the black truffle of the zone of Morella (although also they emphasize those of Benassal, Cat\u00ed or Culla), Cat\u00ed’s cheese has been awarded countless times by international bodies such as the World Cheese Award in London (or those of Morella and Torre de Embesora), products from the Valencian orchard such as the Benicarl\u00f3 artichoke with the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), the penjar or hanging tomato from Alcal\u00e0 de Xivert, the cherries from La Salzadella or the prawns from Vinar\u00f2s. These are the most outstanding products of the innumerable gastronomic jewels that can be found between the interior and the northern coast of the Province of Castell\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

Besides being a privileged place for the palate, the Baix Maestrat is an ideal place for the practice of the sport outdoors, between nature and with beautiful landscapes of Mediterranean vegetation.<\/p>\n

Another aspect to emphasize of our region is its cultural wealth: patrimony, customs and traditions.<\/p>\n

Gastronomic routes<\/h3>\n

In some of the towns of Maestrat you can enjoy tasting of typical products of the area such as cheese, sausages, oils and wines.

Oil Tourism<\/strong><\/a>
\nThe star product of the region is oil, known for its thousand-year-old olive trees.
\nThere are a variety of attractions to enjoy oil tourism such as guided tours of natural areas and museums.

Route of the millenary olive trees<\/a>:<\/strong>
\nVisit of the millenary olive trees in the natural museum of La Jana.
\nYou will discover the process of making millenary oil at the “Moli d’Oli” interpretation centre in Cervera del Mestre and then follow the route to the Pou del Mas in La Jana. A place where you will be able to taste the single-variety oils of Olis Cuquello and you will get an insight into their efforts to recover and preserve their cultural and environmental heritage, which is unique in the world: The Millenary Olive Trees.<\/p>\n

Truffle experience<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Visit of truffle plantation. You will experience a guided walk with expert truffle growers to learn first hand how truffle cultivation is and what is the production process.
\nYou will have the opportunity to see how truffle harvesting is done with the use of trained dogs.
\nFinally, you will enjoy a truffle tasting in the picturesque village of Ares del Maestrat.

\nThe wine in the Maestrat region has been one of the main drinks throughout history.
\nWalking around the territory you will find wineries, agro-shops and restaurants where you will discover wines that are irresistible to the palate.<\/p>\n

Very close to here you can find and visit Les Useres winery.<\/p>\n

Sports routes<\/h3>\n

Throughout the territory of Maestrat you will find natural places where you can practice sports on foot, by car or by bicycle \/ MTB.<\/p>\n

In Pe\u00f1\u00edscola we have the Sierra de Irta, a privileged place of nature where you will be able to do a lot of routes like the ones we show you in the following post.<\/a><\/p>\n

Cultural routes<\/h3>\n

The Maestrazgo is a territory very rich in history, where the stone is the great protagonist. In several places of the zone you will discover constructions of dry stone, the furnaces where the buckets were prepared, the farmhouses, the waterwheels …<\/p>\n

The Mesolithic cave art is one of the things you cannot miss. The “maestrazgo” is characterized by its cave paintings, some of which, like those from the Mesolithic period in the Barranco de la Valltorta, have been declared a UNESCO heritage site.<\/p>\n

Also, you can find Iberian villages where there are still stone remains of the old Roman road. On the Via Augusta you will find milestones; stone columns located from stretch to stretch that marked the distances.<\/p>\n

The arrival of the Arabs had an influence on the urban structure such as the narrow and irregular streets and the houses with roofs and few openings. Also, the creation of waterwheels to extract water from the ground.<\/p>\n

Cultural routes to do with children<\/strong>
